Ladybug Lookout

By: Iron Chef & Bruikershand Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 3.0 Container: Regular

Man, even with the photo, the hint, the past logs and a few thousand cache finds between us, this took an hour to find. Why? I really couldn't have told you once I found it. I'm embarrased at how many different places that fit (some part of) the hint I scoured before just getting at the simple meaning of the words. You'da thought we woulda covered that pretty well back in Kindergarten, eh? I was just about beat by the time we were done here (we came from the Bohemian Rhapsody side, so this was close to the end of our route). Anyhow, it was a nice area to be hanging out in even if the GPSr would disagree with me on that point. Thanks!

Bohemian Rhapsody

By: Iron Chef Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

We had a really great hike to this cache, one the old bones are paying for today, but it was really a great destination and it feels good to push oneself just a little more than usual. I think if we had come to this cache and headed back to the car, rather than to the creekbed caches, there would be less to pay for today, but the loop was a nice one to do anyway. It took me an embarrasingly long time to find this cache considering how clear a view it had of the sats. My GPSr was zeroing out at a different spot, but one that matched the hint, so I sorta went nuts over there. When WalruZ came down to see what was taking me so long, I ended up increasing my search area to where my GPSr was reading almost 50 feet! Funny thing was that WalruZ' GPSr was reading 4 feet. Lovely... Traded out geocoins, and left a travelling motogrrl geocoin for the Jeep TB. I already nabbed a spoon a couple years back from a cache in Jack's Peak park, so I left this one in the cache. Thanks!

Vomica Utriusque Vestri Domus Sequoia Sempervirens

By: Touchstone Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Small

"Doo doo doo doo... You are now entering the elusive cache zone" Okay, well we were leaving it. I was having a bad GPS day. My left knee hurt. My ego was bruised from too much Gravity. Oh, and an almost-DNF that WalruZ just about had to set me in front of for me to find. Oh, and another almost-DNF that I came up with basically after I had mentally quit loo king...

But I found this cache!

Then there were only a handful of names on the logsheet. One of which was not my lovely hiking parter, who has purported to have found said cache. You can imagine the ribbing that ensued there. Anyway, on loo king through the online log, it might could maybe perhaps possibly be that there was another cache at this site? I only found the one, but then I wouldn't look too much longer after finding it, eh? Painted tupperware with a GeoSticker, hmmmm. What'd the folks on September 9 find? Nice area, burbling and all, and even a smidgen of signal. Thanks for the cache!

ODS: From Here To Eternity

By: Touchstone Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

That's a trailhead? Really? I was following the arrow up the scrub and into some fencing, which was to be an omen of my luck on our bigger outing planned for the day, but it turns out WalruZ had the cache in hand already. Thanks for the seedling...

A quick stop on our way to a day-long hike, and I didn't use up any of (what ended up being) my precious water for this one. Thanks!

The Point in Caching

By: dimkasmir & OwlCacher Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

Ahhh, if only GPSr's actually could locate a point within a 3 foot radius... Unfortunately, the best one can do with a consumer GPSr has about 20 ft accuracy, so that would be a search area in ivy of piX20squared feet. Under non-tree-cover conditions. Came by again this afternoon, but a group of young people were sitting in a circle near the area. Decided that this coul d wait a few more days.

The Point in Caching

By: dimkasmir & OwlCacher Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

Yeah, I'll agree that ivy hides aren't particularly fun, but sometimes that's all someone can think of for an area -- besides the south bay is lousy with them, so why not have a couple up here? I had another 30 minutes or so after work that I could search, but honestly this type of area (almost completely covered in ivy and other ivy-like foliage) requires a group search to find quickly. Couple that with the tree cover causing signal bounce and I'm afraid that if this one is there it will need a higher difficulty rating for the sheer amount of ivy in the search area, or a more pointed hint (x feet from the end of the grass, x feet from the corner of the constructi on fencing, or describe the tree or bush it might be near). I never did get my GPSr to read better than 25 feet anywhere, and it never stayed that low for long. Although the construction guys had cut out for the day and the homeless had moved to wherever their afternoon spot is, several soccer moms were watching me doing a pretty obvious search of the area (although I felt much more comfortable making soccer moms uncomfortable than searching in front of the homeless contingent this morning). I did find a black backpack that I wouldn't touch, the remains of two homeless encampments (complete with police notice of the illegality of urban camping in the park), several spent needles, three stashes of broken bottles and glass shards, many used articles of clothing, etc. Not a place I'll be bringing the baby back for...

The Point in Caching

By: dimkasmir & OwlCacher Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

There is an art to hiding a good urban cache in SF. One of the "points" in practicing that art is that cachers should be free to search the area somehow even as people are passing by and going about their business. Unfortunately, between the ongoing construction within 100 feet of this cache and the permanent urban campers hanging out on the bench facing the hide site with nothing to do but stare at me, I was unable to mount anything resembling a search near the zero point - and this is at 9:30 on a Tuesday morning! Knowing this part of the park as I do, its only going to be worse later, but at least as a lone female I will feel safer searching in the presence of kids and dogs playing on the lawn in the afternoon. Of course, that will still put the cache at risk...

Broken Windows

By: BigdaddyJ Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Regular

What a cool old photo you've posted there, we did not have the benefit of those while on the hunt, though. Man are those buildings run down now... I would never have guessed this was the same crisp place in the bottom photo! thanks for bringing us there.

PegLeg

By: BKip Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Another great BKip hide! The area was starting to thin out after the sporting events, so this was probably an easier grab than it would have been a couple hours earlier! Thanks.

Hamilton Island

By: JohnnyVegas, adopted by Huntnlady Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

My normal MO these days of Geo Baby-care and full-time work has changed how I cache. I now have a new-fangled GPSr that will hold some minimal information in a comment section, and I basically run a PQ for traditionals and cache on waypoint (and cache container type/rating) alone. Since this showed up as a Trad, we stopped and had a great walk there with Geo Baby on my back, and BKT for moral support (ok, I think she wanted some exercise today). We found the nicely-hidden cache and signed the log, returning home to find that it is a traditional but may or may not have logging requirements now. So, since I'm utterly confused about that, I'll just log the find and if that's a problem I can change it to a note.

Knot Exactly

By: J5 Crew Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Micro

Nice hide, and a nice walk from the trailhead parking with Geo Baby on WalruZ' back (this time). We had a really nice afternoon at HAFB today, thanks in large part to your caches!

Wall Eyed (Strabismus Exotropia)

By: geovirus Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

I think I was just about out of steam this evening when we stopped by this cache. Luckily WalruZ and BKT were also on the job, and I just went back to keep Geo Baby company after I couldn't see the wall for the rocks... TFTC.

Delta Gamma

By: J5 Crew Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I wasn't a DG when I was in college, but I did know someone that was. Sorry to hear about your sister. I've not been to HAFB since the "redevelopment", thanks for showing us the way!

Branching Out

By: J5 Crew Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

I think this was the only cache today that my GPSr was actually pointing to! The neighbor was very suspicious, but from his vantage point he could not see me do my thing to get the cache, and I doubt he'd come across it on his own... Thanks!

M A R S

By: J5 Crew Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

I think there's only one legal way up to this one, and it happens to be the lazy way! Very cool area, though. A place I would not have ventured without a geocache to lure me. As WalruZ' log notes, the cache seems to be missing a key piece, but we improvised and retrieved it to sign the log. Others will want to make sure they are similarly prepared until the cache owner can get to this one for some maintenance!

Double Crossed

By: rtm gang Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Regular

I was zeroing somewhere entirely different from WalruZ, so it was good that he was searching the right area (or good that his GPSr was being more cooperative today, I guess). I wasn't sure that I wanted to dive into those blackberry bushes, but I was getting ready to when he made the find!

Hawk View

By: BigdaddyJ Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

The thistle was killer, even though we're at the end of the season, but the cache was in great shape. Lots of toys, although it would be hard to get kids all the way up to the cache with the waist high daggers! I hope that's not a year-round thing... Anyhow, great view and nice to find a nice big cache! Thanks.

To Buy For

By: BKip Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I'm wise to BKip-ness, however my GPSr was far less accurate than WalruZ' and he made the grab. Thanks for the cache!

Isherwood Staging Area

By: TeamSpaz Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Regular

Came by today to leave a little something for justinhorner, set just behind the still-well-concealed cache. The cache is in good shape and takes only a little work to get to...

Ravenswood Fishing Pier

By: TeamAlamo Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I had never been out this way, and so today (with great weather along the bayfront) was a great treat! Found the cache in a most logical place for a micro 'round these parts, and kept my eye out for the Highway patrol car that had slowly passed me at the nearby cache! TFTC.

Baylands, Then and Now

By: MotorBug Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

WalruZ forgot to mention the cruiser that slowly went by as I did my business at the cache. I thought we'd be frisked for sure! Later I saw the trailhead and given all the great hidden parking there, that may be the perfect place to start our next romp at the bay! Thanks!

Bayfront Revenge

By: Rogue Ramblers Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

I was looking around without having read anything about the cache, and so I investigated a couple spots before realizing that I was nowhere near my zero. I wandered over to where WalruZ had set up shop (apparently he looked at his GPSr) with Geo Baby and wondered why he wasn't finding anything -- it was in the first place I looked over there. Nice work on the cache!

We had a nice little stroll with the baby to this cache. I didn't find it on the first pass, but WalruZ tends to have a much better eye for these type of hides! He came up with it on his turn around. Thanks.

California Tarantula

By: Raptor & Rex Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Regular

Props to WalruZ for coming up with this cache on the way back. I had searched and searched but just couldn't come up with it. There was a large group of young teens out with some sort of leader on a nature-rock-climbing-be-as-loud-as-you-can be outdoor expedition. That's my excuse for not finding the cache, my mojo was interrupted! I wasn't lucky enough to see any of the real live tarantulas, but I guess its probably a little too late in September for them. We had a great hike around here today! thanks.

Behind the Museum

By: airhead234320 Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Small

Wow, you haven't found any of these out here?! You should get out more... I did about 35 caches in Iowa over the span of a year a couple years back, and didn't find any of these there, thinking people in the midwest just don't do that sort of thing. Just goes to show you that sample size matters. Thanks for the quickie!

Wall Point

By: mathgen Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.0 Container: Small

Our car was full enough (LeChuck might say it was overly-full since he was squnched in the far back with little in the way of legal seating) that paying the money to enter Mt. Diablo was the right thing to do. So we did. We picked up the correct trail off of a nice picnic area where a large group of inner-city-type kids were being led on a novice rock climbing expedition. That was very entertaining. Then we got to the nice, wide, baby-friendly trail and hiked at least a mile out to the cache site. The cache was fairly easy to find, good coords, and we were FTF to boot. However, the lid had already popped off the pseudo-tupperware used as the container. Not a good sign for how it will stand up in the weather of Mt. Diablo. You may want to consider changing the container before winter to something sturdier and waterproof... This cache had sat unfound for long enough that it seemed the right thing to do to take the TB, even though all my travelling Geocoins had been inadvertantly left in the car. We saw a baby snake on the trail during the walk back. Perhaps it was a rattler but coulda been a baby kingsnake too. Thanks for the hike!

Path Cache

By: wendycat Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

WalruZ came up with the find while I was flailing around just a bit. I didn't seem to have the right vantage point to spot this one myself! Some cammo might help this seedling last a little longer since it seemed to be an easy view for someone of WalruZ' stature that was walking by... Thanks!

By: sandychell and Toaboys Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Regular

Nice little Sunday excursion! Part of the cache container is a broken, and that sort of container wouldn't be very waterproof even intact, so the owner might want to replace it before the rains come... Thanks for the smiley!

For Max

By: wendycat Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Small

Took some looking but we finally came up with it. It seems this area, in fact perhaps the whole block, is used for nefarious activities given the interesting litter we found near here and the Bookworm cache... No problems for us on a quiet Sunday morning, though. Thanks!

Snowy Plover

By: el Jim Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

We took a nice little walk from the nearest legal parking that we knew of. There was a bike tour/race passing through, but in all honesty the riders didn't seem all that competitive because lots of them stopped to gab just a hundred or so feet from the cache. Thanks for the smiley!

By: Eagles Wing Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

This took a little time, but I found the cache, although in a spot not consistent with the hint. I replaced it in the closest spot that corresponded with the hint, but the owner will definitely want to check on its placement since I think it might be a bit too exposed for its own good... TFTC!

Sunol Troll

By: Jimswim Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

A cache to start the day (okay, it started the afternoon, technically) of hiking around Sunol. We came just to see what we could see, but apparently WalruZ couldn't see much at this cache site, cuz he required some technical assistance... TFTC.

Pic, Stik and Log

By: Bear n Grin it Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Regular

This was by far my favorite cache of the day. I don't think it had anything to do with consuming food there, either. The cows were congregated about 200 feet away in the shade of a nearby tree. We didn't see cows not congregated under a tree during our whole hike until the late afternoon. Maybe they know something we don't... Those are some great wild apple trees nearby, too. Some cute pics in the logs, TFTC!

E.T. Call Home #2

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Small

I still think that we would have eventually ended up at a trail junction that would have taken us back to this one, but WalruZ was right that it was faster and do-able to off-road that last 200 feet since Geo Baby was starting to become disenchanted with our afternoon plans... Thanks!

Cat Tracks

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Small

Man, I'm glad we nixed the idea of bushwhacking the last 400 feet... This is where the real fun caching started for me, as soon as I realized that there were official trails that weren't on the map! Thanks.

Cannon Bore

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Micro

Lots of places this one could be, and I was apparently set on finding a different sort of container for some reason. After a good 10 minutes on the job by myself, WalruZ was recruited to search in return for me taking the baby for a spell... He managed to find it pretty quickly, although I did wonders in narrowing down his search area for him! TFTC!

WWicky #4

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

I'm not sure that we came from the trail intended by the cache owner. Or maybe we did and it was meant to be that hard to get upslope... Regardless, I liked the construction of this one and have no idea how you could have kept your balance there while you were installing it!

WWicky #1

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

WalruZ, Geo Baby, cyan_blue and I went out to Garin today to have a nice leisurely hike. Given our time constraints and how much elevation we wanted to tackle, the WWicky series looked like the best option. I had heard lots and lots about the PO, the tree cover, etc. in the past, and so was prepared both mentally and physically for this type of hunt. This first cache on our hiking route was all it was promised, but we had WalruZ there (although I'm not sure that it helped on this particular cache). I thought the hide was clever and the cammo was nice. The thing that didn't help much was the fact that the GPSr just couldn't settle on where it thought we were. First it really liked the one poison oak patch in the entire area, and I entertained doing that, but finally decided to roam around on the hillside a bit more. It was tempting to disturb the three woodrat houses (large beaver-dam-like piles of sticks), but I really tried not to go there although I did pretty much plow one of them down with my hiking stick. I finally found a structure that I liked for hiding a cache on, and then lo oked just a little past it to see something else that looked promising. TFTC.

We were roaming all over the place within the description, as the GPSr's still couldn't quite agree on where we were, but thankfully there was a reasonably obvious item to search and cyan_blue found it. She may or may not have had a little help from Geo Baby -- I was off about 60 feet away mutter ing to my GPSr at the time and didn't see how it all went down... Thanks.

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

I thought this installment in the series was a nice little straightforward hide. For once it seemed that my GPSr knew where I was and there wasn't any poison oak anywhere close to my path to the cache! Lots of hiding places, but it was in one of the logical choices. TFTC.

I'm not afraid of ghetto caching, heck I have a cache in SF that could be considered one, but I usually time my visits to those before 10am to avoid the normal harrassing comments I typically receive. I'm just not as familiar with the neighborhoods of Hayward... We were there at the start of peak hours on a Saturday, so WalruZ went out to do the honors. He's intimidating-looking enough that the find went without a hitch as soon as he finished the obligatory, "I don't have a light" interaction with the locals and the half-full beer bottle find. Thanks for the smiley.

Geo Baby and I came by on an evening stroll to find this cache before visiting some friends. A year ago, this park was the site of Geo Baby's baby shower, but I was just too preggers to hunt caches then. It was probably more fun to stroller-friendly this ane anyway! Gratuitous Geo Baby cache photo to be uploaded later. TFTC!

Went on a nice evening stroll with geo Baby this evening to find this cache. It took a while to figure out what the hint was referring to, but got it shortly after that. We took the Jeep since we're going hiking tomorrow and will have an opportunity to place it! Thanks!

Out caching with Geo Baby this evening since the weather is certainly stroller-friendly! A year ago she and I were here for her baby shower, but I was way too big to look for these caches then! I'm sure Geo Baby appreciates me waiting to do them with her... TFTC!
