Semperviren's Point Vista

By: 50sumtin Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

On the way into Big Basin on Friday, we whizzed by this very cool vista point and I thought, wow, what a view -- I bet there's a cache somewhere around there! Sure enough, as we were making our return on Saturday, a cache pops up on the GPSr map and I slow down to round the corner and check for safe parking, and there's that great view! Found a micro in the hinted manner. Didn't find the original as listed in Vaudesir and CiL's logs, but it sounds like fun, either way! This was our last grab for the day before heading back home to get Geo Baby into a bathtub (toddler + camping = more dirt than you can shake a twig at!). Thanks!

WalruZ, Geo Baby, and I were on our way back from a nice 1 night car camping and hiking trip to Big Basin. I'm not sure why WalruZ is dissing my GPSr, since his Geko couldn't get a fix most of the time this weekend, but I find that having the geocache mapped on the features of the road is a big clue, regardless of knowing where you are. Of course, WalruZ doesn't believe in mapping and so doesn't actually know how to extrapolate likely cache locations from the GPSr map (or count city blocks from intersections, apparently)... This becomes a problem when I'm the one driving a nd he's the one navigating and the only query we've got is loaded into my GPSr. Now he's insisting that we need H series GPSrs, as if that would solve the tree cover problem in the Santa Cruz mountains! Sheesh. Anyhow, after pulling over in the wrong place, I looked at the map and then did a U-y to spot the correct turnout for this one. WalruZ did the honors of retrieval, though. This is a good spot to remember for another dayhike trip. I like this entrance! Thanks!

Kelly Timms Creeks Cache

By: 50sumtin Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

WoW isn't kidding about not doing the balance beam act for most of these hides -- I've got one like it in Mt. Tamalpais and I know that he took the wimpy way to it! This cache didn't have a wimp option, which is what made it so cool. We scouted out the area for a nice place when we arrived in order to let Geo Baby out of her carrier and have a snack (which turned into a lunch-level snack, if you know what I mean) and play for a bit. We found a small log down in the sandy bank of the creek where 2 banana slugs were resting nearby. The babble of the brook was soothing, and we all had snacks and drinks while pawing through the cache contents. There was lots to do and see for Geo Baby, and she appreciated being let out to explore. We probably could have gone up Timms over to Sunset and maybe hit Pic-i-nic Basket, but I'm glad that the more prudent option prevailed since it allowed us a lot of time to get back to HQ and another long playtime stop along the trail for Geo Baby. Thanks!

Big Basin Cache

By: 50sumtin Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.0 Container: Regular

After coming from Big Hihney, Geo Baby was still nicely perched on WalruZ' back and so I was motoring along with ProtechCC to the cache site, just ahead of hotshoe and jasmerb. Triplep and size14shoe had arrived at the cache site first, though, found it pretty quickly, and so the cache was already out by the time I got onsite. I got the opportunity to find it myself on the way back up, though, since WalruZ and I realized that neither of us had written down the Bakers Dozen code. I thought that this would be our turn around point to split from the group (and let them continue on at a faster pace, as there was some desire in the group to catch up with the "fast" set), but WalruZ was up for a round trip to a creek cache, so off we went in the same direction, with the indication to the others that they should not wait for us too long at their next stop. Thanks!

Old Growth Cache

By: 50sumtin Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

WalruZ pretty much wrote all the cool details about our experience. I have wanted to relive the S2S experience ever since I did it 3 years ago, and I thought that the HQ to the sea portion of that hike was actually the most fun of my 3 day backpacking trip back then. So, after talking with WalruZ about it and finding out that he would like to try his hand at caching in the park as well (he has his own Story from the Past that he could tell about pre-geocaching time spent hiking in Big Basin), it looked like the whole family was going to try to do at least some sort of expedition on the day of the group hike. After going over logistics and such, our best plan ended up seeing whether Geo Baby was game enough to car camp for a night -- which she was -- but we knew that even after sleeping in her own crib she wouldn't go for a hike as long as this one was going to take us to do with her in the pack. We arrived at HQ on Friday with enough time to check in and set up camp before sundown, and decided to save this cache for our morning meetup. We were up when Geo Baby awoke around 6:30, made some instant oatmeal and tea, broke camp and were at the cache site a half hour before the allotted meetu p time. Geo Baby decided that the boys waiting to leave for their boy Scout merit badge hike were a good audience, and spent several minutes doing a weird baby flirty thing. Then, our GPSrs decided that we should take a stroll to kill some of that time before actually finding the cache. After ab out 20 minutes, we arrived back where we started, the boy scouts had left, and the intrepid 2-day hikers showed up. They had found the cache the night before, so it was just us taking care of business when the bus rolls on by. WalruZ had to be prodded some to get the cache back where it was before the bus occupants disboarded, as he w as in a conversation and could not be interrupted. Then the bus group found the cache, photos were taken, and we were off for our hike!

Big Hihney Cache

By: Chickasaw Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.0 Container: Regular

WalruZ, Geo Baby and I had a nice night of car camping, followed by a little day hike around HQ, partially with the Baker's Dozen hikers to the sea. After hitting the HQ cache, I took the toddler on my back and proceeded up up up hill on the sunset trail, since the Skyline to the Sea trail has this obnoxious detour from HQ to where the King trail starts up toward McAbee. By the time I reached the Sunset-Middle-Gazos junction, I was pretty far behind most of the other hikers (hey - I was carrying over 30 lbs of person/diapers/snacks/water too!) except for a few that hung back to keep me company. At the junction, I was more than ready to switch off with Walruz, who thankfully carried Geo Baby, with snacks, diapers and part of our water, up and over that last hill. (Funny how I had much less trouble going a reasonable pace with her on my back when we were headed downhill!!) Armed with hot shoe and jasmerb, we headed up to sign the cache and do our cacher stuff. I was tempted to just make this a McAbee Overlook day for us and just head outward from here, but the group that was going on needed to catch up to the other hikers that had left before we even got there, and so there wasn't much time to discuss an alternate departure point. We just followed along and I now know the approach there for our next time to Big Basin. Thanks!

Conjunction Junction What's Your Function?

The park really doesn't look like much from the entrance, but man-oh-man it was a neat place for little kids! While we were there, a preschool aged kid was down there stomping feet and splashing around while talking to the duckies nearby. It was really cute! I had some trouble zeroing in on the site with my GPSr, but finally hit on a likely spot when a few teens came in the park and were acting strange. Decided to decrypt the hint so as not to draw too much attention to myself and any search activities. From there, it was just a matter of looking around... Thanks for the cache!

We came through Boulder Creek on our way out of Big Basin after Geo Baby's first car camping experience. This was one of two caches that we visited, then we decided to head back up and over the hill. The area of the cache site was quite busy, with some young men hanging out in the most legal parking areas, and lots of cars driving to and fro. TFTC.

Spur of the Moment 1

By: Calikat Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Small

The last time I was here, perhaps almost 3 years ago, I was part of an intrepid crew of 6 -- soon to be 4 as soon as we reached the payphones at Big Basin HQ. We were on a long backpacking trip to the beach, and only 3 of us were geocachers, so after some time searching near the coordinates and trying to extrapolate the less-precise hint, we had to concede and get on with our hike. Today, it was WalruZ, Geo Baby and a Jeep-ful of camping gear headed for our first overnight trip in a tent. We didn't have the GPSr on as we drove to Big Basin, since we wanted to get there reasonably close to 6 and there was little reception anyway, but I saw that area and flashed right back to the time spent there 3 years ago. Read the hint and concentrated on the area opposite the road that we had searched previously. WalruZ found it in short order, and we were on our way.

Aussie Invasion II: The Revenge

By: Snuva Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Not chosen

Thanks for the great hospitality! We arrived a little early since the toddler's schedule had disrupted my original caching plans for the afternoon, but found Snuva and Corri very welcoming as they set up. Geo Baby had a nice time running around and looking for various forms of trouble to get into, as well as practicing the art of tending bar. I really enjoyed the ambiance of the location. It was a spectacular venue with which to mingle and talk to various friends, both familiar and new. It also helped that there was a nice fence corralling off the lawn area! We headed out fairly early by party standards since Geo Baby was starting to run out of steam and LeChuck had changed his mind about refereeing the Checkers, so I didn't get to properly thank our hosts and talk with Snuva about her yearly adventures before leaving -- Thank You!

I was on my way down to Snuva's wonderful event at the Kinpin Winery nearby, and needed either a "drive-by"- or a "playground"-type cache since I had Geo Baby with me in the car. I've found most of the caches in Morgan Hill, so I headed south a little bit to see what could be done. Drove by a cache that is apparently on the side of Monterey Rd, with no legal parking. Drove by another cache that would have required me to leave the sight of the car. Came upon this site and decided that this could be done with the A/C still running. In fact, saw the cache from the car... It is sitting out in the open -- and I mean, really, in the open. Not sure if it was supposed to be like that, but since I couldn't figure out where it was originally intended with any sort of certainty, I just put it back as I found it. Thanks for the find!

JD Is All In The Name

By: jdsinger Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Small

3TF at 3:11pm today. Geo Baby, Grandma Katie and I went out to see pigs and cows and sheep at the fair today, and on the way home I thought we'd take a little detour and look at the pretty waves to round the day out. I had ulterior motives, as this little guy was just hanging out there in my map, all alone... I hadn't paid enough attention to the caches in my PQ from yesterday to know that this was a FTF opportunity, or I probably would have tried to grab it when I arrived on the peninsula yesterday afternoon. The location was familiar, as I've found a cache here before within 30 feet of the new placement, but this one was definitely less painful to search for. My GPSr was reading about 80 ft. where I found it, though, although my initial search was of a nearby area that 1) was spectacularly consistent with the second part of the hint (although right and left are really horrible directions to give in a hint -- you can come at this from either direction!), 2) was not a terrain 2 and 3) was closer to the posted coords by my GPSr. So, I'm including coords for the cache location taken averaged 75x b y my LCx. I didn't understand the first part of the hint at all, and I'm not really sure why you would mark a common container like this as an "unknown" in the description. It is definitely a location worthy of a cache, so TFTC.

The place was hoppin' on a Friday evening, with the Concorso in town (and probably other interesting activities as well). I was on my way back home from a day at the Monterey County Fair with Geo Baby and Grandma Katie, and was happy to see this one so do-able from our route. TFTC!

Soon to be park - Temp

By: howeler Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Didn't see the nano in the hinted location. Didn't feel very much like searching with all the construction workers on one side and the very high triple fences on the other. I think this will be another one that has to wait until non-business hours, at very least.

Evatt Park - Temp

By: howeler Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

Park? No park there? Just another construction zone in the area... I'll return when things settle down around here and I have a reason to be loitering in all of these interesting places you've found.

the elms are gone

By: howeler Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Ditto what 50sumtin said. This is not a place that one can linger while they search. The workers get very curious and/or jumpy about that. I don't really blame them.

No public parking anywhere around here this morning, and there were people watching my car drive around through the "no trespassing" and "no public parking" areas of both nearby businesses, so I'll leave this one for the weekend when there aren't so many eyes. At least I have a bang-up idea about where the hide is!

I had to wait out some employess of the nearby business outside. They were either having a very long conversation or a smoke break, although I didn't notice any smoke... When they were safely inside, I sauntered over to the cache site and spotted it pretty quickly. More of a micro, really. Hopefully I wasn't being watched from the windows. Thanks for the cache.

Berryessa Creek Trail #2

By: cjspontiac Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

I came by this morning to rectify that DNF, assuming that the security guard would not be needed if the maintenance/construction crews were actually working. I got there about starting time and was treated to a large equipment show, but had to wait out some random person sitting in the area for no good reason. I just became one of those random people sitting for no good reason and she left. Thanks!

Starlite Horseshoes

By: MotorBug Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I have a lull in my work projects right now, where I'm waiting for other people to do their work so that I can do mine, so I dropped Geo Baby off for a day of daycare fun and excitement and decided to spend a couple hours caching in Milpitas. You know, extending the PQ-clean boundaries and all... It was kind of a Milpitas urban hides morning, if you get my drift, and this turned out to be my favorite stop of the morning. There were two dogs exercising their owners with a tennis ball, one was a really nice looking boxer, but no one else was enjoying this pleasant morning in the park. The school across the street seems to be gearing up for a new year. TFTC.

Transcendental Elevation

By: Touchstone Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Regular

Four thousand characters is not enough to log this cache. As it turns out, I ?ll have to break my log up, since I don?t really want to edit any more out of it. This is part 1:

It wasn't quite The Odyssey, but I sorta felt like Odysseus due to the many trials before I could get back to the comfort of the car! We met at the trailhead close to the appointed time, and got our gear all set and ready. We all had trekking poles, 2 per. We all had hydration packs and some munchies. I had my 2L Camelbak and an extra bottle, and somehow knew that I was skimping on the water when both BI and Vaudesir mention the use of a 3L bladder + bottles. I figured I wouldn?t need it on the way back down anyway, and so I didn?t take the time to get the second arrowhead bottle out of the car. More about that later.

We were a small but merry band of cachers headed up to "that ridge over there". No, wait, we can't see the ridge from here. No matter, just keep heading up. The initial ascent was very pleasant, tromping gradually up through the Redwood groves by a calm, babbling creek. We reached the trail sign that indicated the Tanbark Trail continued on to the tin house much earlier than I had imagined. I took this as a sign that we were doing well, making good time, a nd ticking off the elevation rise with relative grace and ease. More on that later.

We came to a little cabin shortly after taking some switchbacks up up up from the Tin House signage. I was starting to think that the Tin House loop might have been a really nice hike. On the way up, the cabin ap peared unoccupied, but the yard had been cleared, no doubt for fire prevention, and we skirted around the fence, bushwhacking through the sorta-trail along the left side. As we approached the end of the residence, just along the trail, there was a nice garden hose that likely belongs to the cabin owners. Vaudesir, Kealia and BI enjoyed washing their hands and faces for a reprieve from the bugs and bug spray. I wanted to keep slathered up with bug spray as much as possible. Not that it was helping, or anything. The flies were starting to find their energy and decide to follow us up to the cache at this point. I had lost a bit of weight on my back, no doubt due to the amounts of water I was imbibing as we gained that elevation, and so I marked the hose with a waypoint in my GPSr. It came in very handy on the way back down. Log continued in the note below.

Transcendental Elevation

By: Touchstone Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Regular

Part II: The next part of the hike was the 2nd-most brutal for me. I?m fine with elevation gain; but I tend to take it slowly. I trailed the pack of merry (and bug-ingesting) cachers. I enjoyed the climb, but at times it seemed like we weren?t getting anywhere. My GPSr seemed to have us walking up the hill in circles. I didn?t mind the poison oak, really, it wasn?t that bad (I think that anything not brushing me in the face isn?t bad). I started to think that maybe I had bitten off more than I could chew with this hike. I didn?t think I was going to make it. At one rest point, where BI h ad stopped to wait for me to catch up, I said that I thought I would need to turn around. He convinced me to keep going; w e had plenty of daylight and the Coast Ridge Trail was just a little ways away. I steeled my mind to get to the Coast Ridge trail, which was a beautiful little dotted line in my GPSr, less than a knuckle wrinkle away from the black arrow. BI was right, I made it there fine, but there was still a mile to go. I felt like turning back again, or pitching a tent and taking a nap, but gave that nice wide and hard-packed fire road a chance. It was a nice walk along the ridge. Great views on the ultra-clear day. It was even a tad hot and I was wondering where the marine layer had gone. Maybe it doesn?t like bugs? Up the paved road to the transcendental point of elevation we were to attain. I was invigorated. I scarfed down 4 homem ade brownies that I had with me. I drained my extra bottle. We celebrated Vaudesir?s 1k. I?ll upload photos later. I was elated that I had continued our journey and felt that sort of endorphin rush upon descending the peak.

The first 2 miles down were quick, fun, and rather painless. We reached the cabin (and the hose) just in time for all of our bladders, and after a quick rest started back down to the Tin House sign. At this point, it did look like someone was occupying the cabin. The most brutal part of the hike for me: that last 2 miles on the Tanbark trail. My left hip hurt, my right knee hurt, and my legs weren?t really paying any attention to what my brain was trying to tell them to do. Grace and ease on the ascent, bumbling on the descent. Going over a fallen tree across the trail, I ended up with a symmetric calf cramp to Vaudesir?s. There were happy and non-disheveled people trotting up the trail as we uncoordinatedly went down it. They didn?t seem to have much water with them. I think I remarked more than one time during the last mile that this was a crazy person?s hike. I still think it is. But it also brings a sense of accomplishment, and the challenge of pushing yourself farther than you would (or should) perhaps normally go. Thanks for helping me go a little nuts!

Reade's Rigo Rendezvous

By: Capt Tong the Jungle Mock Rangers Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

I did the legwork on this one a few months ago, and was early enough today to sneak the extra time into the commute that it took to get back to the location of the final. Since I didn't have any signal there, I ended up guestimating the cache location based on its position in Mapsource. As it turns out Mapsource was sorely off, to the point where I was looking on the wrong side of the street. After 10 minutes of nonchalantly digging through some plantage, I broke out the hint and noticed that the hinted items were quite a ways away from where I was searching. Checked the two places relevant to the hint and found it. Thanks.

Security guard sitting in a car parked about 20 feet from the cache site. There was no way for us to search without drawing attention, since he looked rather bored. We went on in the stroller to grab the other caches out this way, thinking that he'd move on or do some rounds or get some lunch or something, but no luck. He was right there, doing nothing, when we returned over an hour later. Maybe next time...

By: DuckeyLee Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

I had Geo Baby with me this morning, and she just wasn't up for the time it was taking to locate the cache. The GPSr settled in one place; no luck, then another; no luck there either. Re-read the description and got a little puzzled by the "not a drive up" and figured I was doing something wrong. People were starting to come into work at the nearby establishment, so I decided to leave it for another day.

Berryessa Creek Trail - #1

By: cjspontiac Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

This was a rather fortunate morning to be out on the Berryessa Creek trail. Hardly anyone out and about at the ripe old hour of 9 am. Geo Baby and I walked out to the site from the trailhead at BCT2, and then went to explore some pine cones. Geo Baby felt a little uneasy about her footing in the area, so I held her hand as she inspected each pine cone on the ground. So, getting around to finding the cache took awhile... Thanks!

Selwyn Park

By: howeler Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Micro

Ack! Finally! That is one little bugger to find, even with the park vacant. This was my second visit back and this time I had a guess that narrowed the search items down well enough. However, my initial search this morning produced a yellowjacket nest, but I guess these aren't that aggressive because I surely would have been stung while accidentally whacking that thing off with my bare hands if they were. Some folks were up and about, getting taxis to head to church probably. Geo Baby was out with me this morning and had fun for a bit on the playground, but didn't want me to be too far away so it was hard to search. Finally she took a break to have some milk and scone that we brought with us, and I was able to locate the cache.

Nice hide. I expected security to come by at any minute, but from the looks of the nearby building, there may not be anybody that cares about this location... Geo Baby and I had fun looking for it, and then were happy to find some nice toys inside! Geo Baby insisted on taking a smiley-faced sun and we left some bouncy balls, a rubber ring, and some Geo Baby sig items in exchange. Thanks!

Jumpity, jumpity, jumpity. I ended up checking 3 likely spots because my GPSr couldn't make up its mind at the location. I was out with Geo Baby this morning to get coffee/milk and scones while WalruZ took LeChuck to the airport. We also decided to avail ourselves of the quiet Sunday morning out and about, and get some caches at my southern boundary, most of which were playground hides and such. Thanks for the cache!

Hiding at Hidden Lake

By: TeamSpaz Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

My 3 options here are 1) a DNF that will never be rectified, 2) an SBA that will just cause geo-litter to perpetuate, or 3) a Find, justified by signing a little sheet of paper in a cache-like container. Knowing the owner and the fact that I am likely to not get a response on whether or not I found the right cache, nor the opportunity to re-hunt the "real" cache, I'll just assume that I found what the owner has intended this cache to become... Nice area, anyway. I wouldn't mind adopting this from Joe if he'd like to give it up.

Therapy Cache #1

By: Marky Joani Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

This was our last cache stop of the morning, before returning home so that Geo Baby could take a proper nap. Given that, she was being only a little contrary about finding the cache before heading over to the preschool-aged playground that was in her line of sight. We tried 3 different approaches to the zero point, and the last one, while making me a little nervous about people seeing me, yielded the cache! After the signing was done, Geo Baby was summoned back over to me, with the promise of swinging, which we did. Thanks for the cache!

Wild West Geocaching Event (Cupertino)

By: GeoWomyn_SF_CA ,CTomGeo, and L-grl Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Other

Thanks for the hoedown: Good food, good company, and good times! There was even appropriate weather for an Old West event! WalruZ and I brought raffle items without consulting each other, so our family had a pretty impressive block of tickets. We enjoyed the impromptu demonstrations of lassoing, dancing and horseshoe throwing, and also gazed thoughtfully on the impressive BBQ setup they've got there. Geo Baby maxed out at about 2pm and we had to go rectify that nap situation after all, so I think we missed saying hi to a few folks that came later.
