Wells...theres a Cache there!

By: joshgreenrules Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

A stark spot with a serious reminder of a dark decision in our history. Thanks for pointing out the spot. mjp303

Mopigeon's Jam Cache

By: biggertrux Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

The others opted for one side the the fence, and I took the other, which turned out to be correct. Cute camouflage, although it didn't fool me for an instant. TFTC. mjp303

Always a pleasure to visit the namesake spot. Thanks for pointing it out with a cache. mjp303

Molly's Portal View

By: Miriam & Molly and Peter & Bella Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

As airsax mentions, the direct approach to this cache is not going to work. bthomas muttered under his breath that he wished he had ropes, but fortunately for my laundry, that was not a possibility. In our explorations, we found a wonderful cliff pocket meadow above the cache. There were two plaques commemorating the spot as a final resting place. Quite a nice way to pass the time, if I do say so. Eventually we found an approach at the correct elevation. The signs mentioning that 3 people have ridden their bikes off the trail were sobering, but I had to smirk at the under-lying message: Don't be the fourth because the BLM will close the trail and then nobody will get to come up here. Great views, of course, and a letterbox about 10' away. TFTC. mjp303

Picnic Rock

Spider's View of the Colorado

By: conrenae Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

I found this cache while wheeling with bthomas and airsax. Lots of fun and now I've got a brag sticker for the jeep! Several folks on ATVs watched us up the first obstacle and then turned around: I'm not sure if we did anything to bolster their confidence. Heh. TFTC. mjp303

Grand Junction Travel Bug Cache

By: MEH 298 Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Small

I'm just getting around to logging this cache. I dropped 4 bugs in, and I see that they have already been grabbed from me, which is what you get when you're two weeks late. I'm glad they're on to new adventures. TFTC! mjp303

CO Sign for Cache - East

By: geo$ing Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Regular

After finding this cache, we had a spirited discussion of whether or not it would count for CO in the stats or not. Kind of a bummer how much trash there is here, although I'm sure a lot more than cachers make the stop. Thanks. mjp303

Belly Scratcher

By: ZenBabes Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

No belly scratching for us...perhaps a little bumper banging on the way down though. Good spotting all the way, and that included finding the cache. Thanks! mjp303

JCs Camp Cache

By: COYODY & BARNOBLE Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Micro

Potash Box Canyon

By: Gary Garmin, The US-Operative, and CaverSpenc Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

Out with bthomas, who's been here before. We searched at both locations, and then dropped a replacement cache at the waypoint indicated in my log. It's a clear plastic waterbottle. The hint on the cache page should apply. Apparently jspearson dropped a new cache at the coordinates posted on the cache page? Perhaps there are two containers now. In any case, what at great box canyon! Thanks for bringing us here. mjp303

Dewey Bridge

By: JJAC Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Virtual

This was the trailhead for our run to the Top of the World. What a cool old bridge with an interesting history. I was so sorry to learn that it burned down shortly after our visit. Hopefully it can be restored or rebuilt once again. TFTC. mjp303

Top of the World Cache

By: Paleface Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

I wheeled to the top with bthomas and airsax. What a fantastic spot and so very deserving of a geocache. After a thorough 3-person search for about 30 minutes, we came to the same conclusion as several previous seekers that the cache simply isn't there any more. Because of the remoteness of the location, and in the interest of preserving the spot for future finders, we decided to drop a temporary micro cache and record a find. Admittedly, not everyone will agree with this tactic, but since each of us have over 2K finds (one of us way, way more!) rest assured that we did it to preserve the spot and not to augment our own statistics. Hopefully the cache owner will make a maintainance visit to correct this problem, but if not, perhaps a future visitor can put in a proper container. Thanks for bringing us to a wonderful location! mjp303

Indian Petroglyphs

By: Ron Streeter Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Virtual

Caching Moab between wheeling runs with bthomas and airsax, who had already sent in our answers. I loved the views and the thought that people have been enjoying them for a very long time. I also spotted the letterbox closeby. TFTC. mjp303

There's a Hole in that Rock.

By: BBnot2Busy Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Regular

Urban Sprawl, yikes!

By: CaverSpencer Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Small

Although overcast and cloudy during our visit, the views of the snowcapped mountains and lake were breathtaking. As to the uncontrolled development...yikes, indeed! It's not a good sign when you pass as many brand new, unoccupied houses as we did enroute to this cache. [:O] The hike to the cache stretched our sea-level lungs a bit. Thanks. mjp303

By: CaverSpencer Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Small

Coal Mining, Then and Now

By: AD0OR Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Other

I really enjoyed looking at this equipment, and learned a lot about what happens in a coal mine. There was one piece that was used to set a world record for the most coal mined in 24 hours...that was one incredibly large amount of coal! Thanks for the earthcache! mjp303

The Utah Well Rounded Cacher

By: CaverSpencer Difficulty: 5.0 Terrain: 5.0 Container: Regular

WHEW! [8D][8D]Co-FTF with bthomas[8D][8D] airsax was along, too. I've had my eye on this challenge since Kealia first created it in the Bay Area about a year ago. About the time I'd nabbed every D/T combination within easy reach, the chance for a wheeling trip to Moab with bthomas presented the opportunity to finish the challenge off. I have to say that there were a few tense moments as we nearly DNF'd a D4.5/T4 near Pyramid Lake, and then only barely made it to Floating Island (D4.5/T5) right before dark. Those are just a few of the caching memories that will last a long, long time.

Thanks to Caverspencer for setting up a Utah version of this chall enge, and to all the cachers here who have set up caches to waypoint the fantastic natural beauty that this state has to offer! I know I've only scratched the surface, and hope to return soon.

I'm writing this out longhand: Thanks so very, very much for the cache. mjp303

By: Udink Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Small

We weren't reading all the cache page desriptions before hunting the caches along Buckhorn Draw, so this came as a bit of a suprise! bthomas was the mountain goat of the group, although I did climb to the extent of my comfort limit. Thanks for the challenging cache in a beautiful location! mjp303

Munitions Tunnels

By: Basset Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Regular

After some discussion about the correct way to access this cache, we set off in a different direction than our intended route down Buckhorn Draw. It was a good decision as we were able to drive right up to the overhead blast holes. After spending a few minutes chatting with other folks and peering down into the tunnel, we were off to explore and find your cache. An interesting place with an intreguing story. Thanks for sharing this place! mjp303

DeViDe I 70 Quick Cache

By: DeViDe Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.0 Container: Regular

A lot of interesting things going on at this cache. First, it was evident that someone had camped at ground zero. Second, some of the branches on the pine tree must have been in the way, because they had been removed. Third, whoever had removed them must have done it with a pocket knife or something because it looked like quite a struggle. Fourth, the pine tree had decided to take its revenge since there was sap all over the place. Fifth, the campers has tried to stem the flow of sap by tying little pieces of plastic grocery bag over the ends of the cut branches. Bizzare. The amazing thing is that, after all that, I don't the campers even noticed the cache! mjp303

Wedge Overlook Cache and Ride

By: koshea Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 1.5 Container: Not chosen

Not having bikes, the vehicles came along for this trek. The trail was clearly signed for jeeps, although by its width, it appears to be primarily an ATV trail. In fact, we stopped for a convoy of about 20 of them to pass. I was happy to be inside with the windows rolled up. Heh. Fun little side tour with great views. Thanks for placing the cache! mjp303

find me if you can

By: ALLEN77 Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Regular

Our second stop of the day in an area with caches that have unusual D/T combinations. We headed up the road until the arrow indicated that we were perpendicular to the cache, and then turned uphill along a narrow ATV track. I wasn't confident that it would get us where we needed to go, but, in fact, it did after a bit of wandering around. Climbing the last several hundred feet to ground zero, we began to search...and search...and search. I was starting to despair that we wouldn't find it. The cache ended up being about 30' off to the NE at the base of the big rocks. There are many, many places to hide a cache, but fortunately we didn't have to worry about active snakes, it was just too chilly. After signing the log we moved on with a great sense of relief. Thanks for the challenge. mjp303

B$

By: kanemen Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 5.0 Container: Regular

This was the start of our multi-state offroad adventure, with the unusual D/T combination of the cache as one of the motivations for making the find. Up and up we travelled, passing many optimistically placed street signs on progressively rockier tracks. On this clear morning, the view from the top was indeed a 'B$' one. Thanks for a fun trek and a great conclusion. mjp303

By: byjer Difficulty: 3.5 Terrain: 5.0 Container: Regular

Yeah, it's up there somewhere alright. Even though we'd been warned, the location of the cache was still suprising, given the crumbling nature of the rocks. I suppose that's what you get when you're hunting those unusual D/T combination though. We did have a secret weapon though given that bthomas was along, but as it turned out, his memory of the cliff led me on a mountain goat's adventure while the more cautious airsax eventually made the find in a more straighforward location. Thanks for the scramble and the Fizzy Matrix box check. mjp303

What a cool spot! Congratulations to airsax on her 2K find. She saved us with her new UT topo maps since the turn off to the cache isn't marked, and the relatively recent grading of the main road makes it seem even more obscure. We found the contents of the cache in good shape, but the unending UV rays have not been kind to the plastic cache container...quite brittle! Thanks for bringing us to this remote spot. mjp303

The first of many along a grand tour of CA, NV, UT, and CO with airsax and bthomas. A big shout out of Gary Vicky who met us at the cache with the required equipment. All I had to do was climb the (...over, definitely over...) 10 Foot Pole. I don't exactly understand your D/T rating on this cache, but hey, thanks for filling a Fizzy Matrix square! mjp303

El Sombroso Junction

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 2.0 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Regular

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. It is a neverending source of irritation to me that I had to hike 6 miles to get to this cache along a road that I could have very easily driven in my Jeep. [;)] TFTC. mjp303

Sweet Sounds Of Water

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Small

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. The wind in the trees and the water falling over the rocks made a very relaxing sound. Thanks for giving us a reason to pause and enjoy it! TFTC. mjp303

Holed Up There

By: CKayaks Difficulty: 1.5 Terrain: 3.5 Container: Micro

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. I'm not sure why the cache was so wet since the top was capped securely. Perhaps the hiding spot had filled with water during recent rains? TFTC. mjp303

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. We stopped for this one on the way back down. It about killed me to climb the last 100'. TFTC. mjp303

Woods Cache

By: Marky & Joani Difficulty: 2.5 Terrain: 2.5 Container: Regular

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. In the 4+ years since the cache was placed, the PO situation has changed considerably. There's pleny of brand new sprigs poking up. I liked the hiding spot. TFTC. mjp303

Sombroso Spur

By: pedaler Difficulty: 1.0 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

Out with airsax for a challenging hike to El Sombroso on a cool and windy day. Of course, this was the objective. She was a great sport to come with me a second time, having visited a month or so earlier with a GBA deathmarch group starting from Lexington Reservoir. Wisely she waited by the trail while I made the final push. Rain earlier in the day meant that I was soaked after finishing my wade through the bushes, but I perservered and now the box on my Fizzy Matrix is checked! TFTC. mjp303

Bay Tree Bay View

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Small

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. We came at this one from down the hill. The approach required a bit of a bushwack. BI zeroed near some really thick PO bushes, which I refused to approach. Wandering off in another direction, I had the cache in hand a few minutes later. TFTC. mjp303

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. Great views! I was huffing and puffing pretty hard to get them though. TFTC. mjp303

Fungus Humungus

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Small

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. Suspicious piping and electrical wire nearby, but I think it's just for pumping water up to the building on the ridge. I liked this hide! TFTC. mjp303

Creek View

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. A quick find, probably because we'd gotten used to the hiding style on previous caches. TFTC. mjp303

WWicky #3

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. We intended to find this cache second, but took a wrong trail and ended up circling way around from the other direction. This one was the primary objective for me today. That odd T/D combination fills a Fizzy Challenge requirement. TFTC. mjp303

WWicky #1

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

Out for a hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. With the tree cover overhead making zero a bit imprecise, we searched for a bit before finding the well hidden cache. TFTC. mjp303

WWicky #5

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.0 Terrain: 4.0 Container: Regular

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. Love these steep hills green with new grass...the fresh PO sprigs, not so much. TFTC. mjp303

WWicky #4

By: CompuCash Difficulty: 4.5 Terrain: 4.5 Container: Regular

Out for a hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. We searched down the hillside for quite a while, gradually working our way up. A very large bay tree has recently fallen accross the creek, and the branches and leaves are covering the ground very close to where we eventually found the cache. For a while, I thought the cache might be underneath the tangle of branches. Eventually I spotted a pen on the ground which led to a quick find. TFTC. mjp303

Out for a caching hike with British Invasion on a beautiful spring day. After finding the cache, we spend a moment trying to determine the make of the car. Although it's pretty stripped, BI happened on a piece of trim...a Mercury. TFTC. mjp303

Tick-Tock Bus Stop

By: runnerinwoods Difficulty: 3.0 Terrain: 2.0 Container: Micro

Recognized the spot as I approached. Just after 7pm, things seemed quiet at first, but then people started streaming out of the nearby building. If they work until 7, I wonder what time they start? Anyhow, I hung out until things quieted down again, and then got down to a serious search. Ahhhh...TFTC. mjp303
